Science Curriculum

At Fiddlers Lane Community Primary School, science is a vital part of our curriculum because we are living in a rapidly evolving world. We believe that a high‑quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world around us through the key disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science enables children to explore, explain and question the natural world, helping them to develop knowledge that is relevant, meaningful and increasingly sophisticated as they move through school.

We place strong emphasis on building a secure body of foundational scientific knowledge and concepts. Lessons are carefully structured so that pupils revisit and build upon prior learning, making clear connections between ideas. Children are encouraged to use precise scientific vocabulary, recognise the power of rational explanation and apply what they know to new contexts. Through this approach, pupils develop confidence in what they know and curiosity about what they have yet to discover.

Alongside knowledge, pupils develop key scientific skills through working scientifically (SC1). Across our enquiry‑based science curriculum, children ask questions, make predictions, plan investigations, observe closely and gather evidence. They learn how to record results, identify patterns and draw conclusions using scientific reasoning. These skills promote analytical thinking and help pupils to understand science as a process of enquiry rather than a set of facts.

Science at Fiddlers Lane inspires a sense of excitement and wonder about natural phenomena while also developing resilient, thoughtful learners. Pupils are encouraged to think critically, evaluate evidence and explain their ideas clearly. They learn how science impacts our everyday lives and why it is vital to the world’s future prosperity.

As a core subject, science is given the prominence it deserves. Our ambition is for all pupils to achieve highly, including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND. Through inclusive teaching, clear progression and engaging learning experiences, we ensure that every child is supported to develop the knowledge, skills and curiosity they need to thrive as young scientists.
